Maiuri wrote that this was probably the house and workshop of artisans, possibly cloth-makers and merchants (textores).
The long narrow entrance fauces leads to extremely simple living quarters on the ground floor and to a little internal courtyard, closed by a portico with brick columns (along one of its sides remains of carbonised wood and several weights from a loom were found).
See Maiuri, Amedeo, (1977). Herculaneum. 7th English ed, of Guide books to the Museums Galleries and Monuments of Italy, No.53 (p.42).
According to Wallace-Hadrill, No. 3 leads to private quarters; peristyle court with 4-sided colonnade, 7 rooms. No. 4 leads to large workshop and four further rooms. Activity as weaver inferred from loom frame and weights in peristyle, though not in workshop area. Rustic condition, no decoration except traces in one room.

According to Wallace-Hadrill, this entrance leads to the dwelling area of the property which would have had seven rooms and a peristyle courtyard with four-sided colonnade.
